Car chip shortage to end in 2022, smartphones seen to be hit next

Automotive industry executives said the global semiconductor shortage could last until the second quarter of 2022. However, smartphone production is seen to be hit next, indicative of a possible shortage in supply of appliances and industrial equipment.

Chief economist Iris Pang of ING Greater China shared the automotive sector has been hit the hardest this year but guaranteed China’s production assistance to Taiwan could improve supply.

Blackouts and stricter pandemic restrictions hindered factory output and port operations in Taiwan, forcing the Taiwanese semiconductor companies in increasing their production in China.

Companies in the automotive industry have cautioned about the ongoing difficulty in procuring semiconductors.

ASML, one of the world’s biggest suppliers to semiconductor makers, increased its sales forecast this week following a strong demand from chip giants such as TSMC and Intel.
